Fort Beauregard was built to
guard one of the west approaches to New Orleans at Shell Beach,
where it sits off the coast in the waters of Lake Borgne but
still semi-connected to a bit of land approachable only by
boat. Work on the unusual fort began in 1856 under the leadership of P.G.T.
Beauregard, but was never finished because of hurricane damage. It was unique
in that it used structural iron to a great extent. Located offshore Shell
Beach, Louisiana.
